New keep fit activity inspires residents

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of visiting Frindsbury House, where my cousin had recently become a resident. The house, staff and residents are very familiar to me as my brother was also a resident for nearly 14 years. The Activity/Art room is always busy with a mixture of staff led and individual, resident led activities. On this particular day, my cousin and all the other residents present, were finishing a word game with a member of staff before having some refreshments.

During the refreshments, everyone began talking about ‘Keep Fit’ which was going to be happening later that afternoon. Daisy, who is a highly qualified dance teacher, takes the weekly keep fit session, but already knows all the residents through her work as a member of the domestic team at Frindsbury. This knowledge has ensured that she is able to adapt the exercises appropriately, for everyone to enjoy and join in. All the residents were very animated and keen to tell me about what happens in Daisy’s sessions.

Sandra told me about the warm up and demonstrated some of the moves for me too! Steve said he enjoys everything to do with the exercises and Leigh enjoys throwing the bean bags. Lynn enjoys the tension bands and throwing bean bags and Helen was now looking forward to her first session. The weekly sessions have been running at Frindsbury House since January and started at Birling a couple of weeks ago. Balls, bean bags and tension bands are used with the exercises set to music which makes it even more enjoyable. Sandra told me she feels really happy after Keep Fit with Daisy.

Finally, a visiting physiotherapist watched one of Daisy’s sessions and was very impressed with the variety of activities offered and the very positive engagement by everyone taking part. I’m hoping to see one of Daisy’s sessions, when I next visit and hopefully join in too!
